THIS ALL STARTED WITH TRUMP WANTING TO IMPROVE the National Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. (He’s not the first who’s tried: See “Trump Falsely Claims Obama and Biden Spent Hundreds of Millions” for the facts of this.) Having heard from Maxime Joselow’s “Trump Ordered ‘American Flag Blue’ for the Reflecting Pool. It’s Green Again,” we hear today from Wired, a short item from NPR News, and a late add from CNN.

Fighting Mother Nature With Hydrogen Peroxide. Molly Taft reports “Why the Reflecting Pool Is Full of Algae After Trump’s Renovation,” Wired, June 16, 2026: “On Wednesday Morning, workers poured hydrogen peroxide into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC.”

“The treatment,” Molly Taft describes, “is the latest attempt by the Interior Department to control an algae bloom that has turned the pool bright green, despite President Donald Trump’s costly renovation to make it ‘American flag blue’ in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary. Hot temperatures and climate change are among the risk factors that could be driving the outbreak.”
Possible Sources. Taft relates, “One of the issues appears to be the water source. The Reflecting Pool usually draws water from the nearby Tidal Basin, which is often filled with algae. During periods with high amounts of algae, the water supply switches to municipal drinking water. The US Interior Department didn’t immediately respond to questions from WIRED about which water source is currently feeding the pool.”
Taft continues, “Another issue is the weather. High temperatures create ‘a perfect storm for [algae] to bloom,’ says Hans Paerl, a former professor at the University of North Carolina’s Institute of Marine Sciences. Stagnant water, Paerl says, makes the problem even worse. ‘Lakes and reservoirs around the world—they all have this problem during this time of year.’ Hotter-than-normal weather is expected to hit Washington, DC, to end the week, which could make controlling the bloom more challenging.”
Taft relates, “Paerl also points out another, related driver that the Trump administration has shown it’s not in a rush to resolve: climate change.”

Of course, Trump has claimed regularly—without evidence, as usual—that climate change is a hoax. Melina Walling and Seth Borenstein of Associated Press describe, “Trump Called Climate Change a ‘Con Job” at the United Nations. Here are the Facts and Context.”
Trump… a con job? Once again, his subconscious ascribes to others characteristics that are seemingly his own.
I doubt that Trump will ever understand the intricacies of climate change, but maybe his misguided MAGA supporters might be smarter—especially if they know the difference between blue and green.

A Panel Color Test. Abigail Roedersheimer, Michael Williams, and Kit Maher provide evidence of “Blue Material Peeling Off Bottom of Reflecting Pool, Days After Costly Renovation,” CNN, June 18, 2026. Of course, it’s the “American Flag Blue” that Trump ordered pasted there. ds
